I applied the stock to two different applications and froze the rest for later use.
first quinoa cooked in the stock...took the bite of heat from the peppers out but gave a rich flavor to the grain
also, fresh pole beans from the garden, boiled the beans in the stock, it gave them a nice flavor, spicy and delicious!
served these side dishes with a rib eye steak, the dinner was a big hit, cooked the steak in a hot pan 4 minutes each side, that is just perfect, salt and pepper and brush with olive oil on meat in dry grill pan
always let the meat rest after cooking before cutting open, allow those juices to go back in...I got a BIG kiss for this steak....simple but delicious!
6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain[c] we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
this is the passage that I was considering this morning. Especially verse 8
And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.
Right now it makes me think of the street people...maybe they are on to something. In America we have added the shelter part. That shelter is a right of all peoples. But over and over the word just says food and clothing.
Do Not Worry
25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
Jesus addresses the food and clothing issue, but never speak about housing...this is an idea that we have decided is everyone's right
Honestly Jesus himself had no home
The Cost of Discipleship
57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”
58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
he spent the end of his life homeless and at the mercy of others good will
The Prayer in the Garden
39 Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.40 When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
is it in fact our own greed that allows us to say "such and such" owns this property or that property and no one is allowed there...how many street people are looked down upon in our culture as lacking or not being good enough or just outright crazy...I am not talking about those who are forced into homelessness, but those who choose to live on the streets, or in the mountains or the parks of the city. Not only did Jesus live outside he has a bunch of disciples tagging along. A whole "gang" if you will. somehow thinking about this I believe that Jesus would not be welcome into American culture and traditions, that we would miss him entirely as we broke up his place of rest as we do when we sweep through encampments of street people. this hurts my heart today to think of our misguided, although probably well intended standards and traditions of men.
Is it possible for me to be content with just food and clothing? Have i bought into the belief that until I have a home i am not being a responsible or "godly" person. Is is greed that drives our "American Dream" and have I been so caught up in it that I have not been able to even recognize it for what it really is?
LORD help me to understand godliness with contentment.
